At Star's End! There's very nice man-chest...

It's so Sci-Fi-ey!!

My gorgeous and completely over-worked critique partner Anna Hackett has a new sci-fi action romance At Star's End (Book 1 of the Phoenix Adventures) coming out with Carina Press March 31st, and here's her cover:

Dr. Eos Rai has spent a lifetime dedicated to her mother’s dream of finding the long-lost Mona Lisa. When Eos uncovers tantalizing evidence of Star’s End—the last known location of the masterpiece—she’s shocked when her employer, the Galactic Institute of Historic Preservation, refuses to back her expedition. Left with no choice, Eos must trust the most notorious treasure hunter in the galaxy, a man she finds infuriating, annoying and far too tempting.
Dathan Phoenix can sniff out relics at a stellar mile. With his brothers by his side, he takes the adventures that suit him and refuses to become a lazy, bitter failure like their father. When the gorgeous Eos Rai comes looking to hire him, he knows she’s trouble, but he’s lured into a hunt that turns into a wild and dangerous adventure. As Eos and Dathan are pushed to their limits, they discover treasure isn’t the only thing they’re drawn to…but how will their desire survive when Dathan demands the Mona Lisa as his payment?

Hot, like a sunrise...

It was very warm here yesterday.  That 'Oh, jeez, the car seat is toasty.  Hang on, no, the car seat is BURNING' kind of warm that one is glad only happens occasionally.

Here on the outskirts of crackle country (I'm sure y'all local recall Ash Wednesday, which had an anniversary recently.  I do.), we always have one eye on the Country Fire Service app on the ipads when there's a honkingly hot north wind.  Can't discount the possibility of something fiery and terrible happening.  My heart goes out to everyone affected by the thousands of fires experienced here in the driest state in the driest country every year.

Which is why I apologise in advance for this amusing and also titillating image my lovely CP Rach had on facebook recently.  Call it a silver lining.

May all your gutters be free of leaf litter, your fire pumps working swimmingly and your firemen off-the-shizang built.

Oh, to be in an alternate universe right now...

Romance + Sci Fi + Holidays = A GALACTIC HOLIDAY!

I'm donning my pimping pants to yell from the back dock of my space station:

A GALACTIC HOLIDAY is OUT NOW!

Are you like me?  I love Christmas with adoration bordering on pathological, but sometimes the crazy lead-up blows.  But I HAVE A CURE!

How about an alternate universe?  A few stolen hours getting festive, futuristic and SCHMEXY?

Lose a few blissful hours on A GALACTIC HOLIDAY.

Anna Hackett has teamed up with Stacy Gail and Sasha Summers to bring you her first sci-fi romance, Winter Fusion, in a brand-new anthology from Carina Press.

A Galactic HolidayIt's getting some great reviews:

"If you are a Science Fiction Romance reader A Galactic Holiday is a must read."
"I really enjoyed this collection of novellas and I would recommend it to any fans of romantic sci-fi in the mood for the holidays."

"A Galactic Holiday is a wonderful read for the holiday season. Part romance, part sci-fi, and part just plain fun."

Head over to Anna's blog for your chance to win some intergalactic swag.  I don't know what that is, but it sounds awesome.

I'd like a lightsaber.  Or maybe Anna's hero in nothing but a wrist-sync and a smile.

More AH cover love!

Since school holidays have rendered me less-than-scintillating, I'm bobbing up to share the news of someone blindingly, marvellously, scintillating.

My ultra-productive critique partner, Anna Hackett, has a new cover.

This one is for Mind Raider, Book Two of the Anomaly trilogy.  Which, not surprisingly, follows on from Time Thief, Book One.  Both are novellas.  Both are completely wicked.

I know, because I've read them.  ;)

So, above-mentioned cover love, coming out later this month:

While I'm spruiking (love that word!), check the reviews of Time Thief at Goodreads, where it's averaging 4.8 out of five stars at time of typing.  Completely fabulous.

And I agree.  :)

Anna Hackett's upcoming release from Carina Press - we have cover liftoff!

The very funky Anna Hackett, one of my ultra-talented CP's and fellow Darksider, has a brand new cover!  I stole this from her blog...

This is a collection of scifi novellas out on December 3rd, just in time to get festive, including Anna's WINTER FUSION, which I LOVED BEYOND MEASURE.  Oh, Savan!

Here's the blurb for WINTER FUSION:

Ex-space marine Savan Bardan survived the Galactic Wars to become the most ruthless trade negotiator in the galaxy. His planet needs energy to survive, and he'll do anything to close the deal for the Perman fusion crystals that can provide it—even if it means seducing his beautiful, infuriating opponent, a rival icier than her planet.

Perma's top nego
tiator, Brinn Fjord, lost her father when Savan delayed her planet's Trade Guild membership years ago. She hates the handsome Rendarian and the planet he represents. She's determined to finish the deal and get rid of him as quickly as possible, so she can celebrate the holidays.

But soon the rival negotiators are in a fight for their lives. Besieged by mysterious accidents and unforgiving weather, Brinn and Savan have no one to depend on but each other. As they put the past aside, they uncover a desire hot enough to melt ice, and Brinn discovers a secret that may keep them apart.

Here's the blurb for the whole bang lot:

Do androids dream of electric sugar plums?
A detective who refuses to modify her body teams up with her cyborg rival to track down a burglar who is putting toys into homes. A solitary ice miner finds love and friendship while stranded on the surface of Galileo. And two hardheaded negotiators put their differences aside to evade an assassin and save their planets. Enjoy these visions of Christmases yet to come with three science-fiction novellas from Carina Press.
Edited by Angela James, this anthology includes:
  • How the Glitch Saved Christmas, by Stacy Gail
  • Galileo's Holiday, by Sasha Summers
  • Winter Fusion, by Anna Hackett

Anna's other recent release, Time Thief, is on sale at the moment.  Check out her blog for info...

Finally, in more Hackett news, Anna is at fellow SARA Eleni's Taverna for Writing Buddy Wednesday.

More cover loving...

You know my CP, Anna, right?

Well, she has been INSANELY BUSY.  Not only has she just released the very cool TIME THIEF, but she's got a new cover!

This one is coming out December 3rd, from Carina Press, and will also be a part of their sci-fi anthology, A Galactic Holiday.

Oh, the PRETTY!

What an inspiration...

Ha!  Did you think I was going to post another picture of Hugh Jackman sans shirt?  While that is always a distinct possibility, I actually wanted to talk about something other than the male form today.

I know, what's with that?

Anna Hackett, author of a number of awesome Nocturne Bites and one-third of our sensational critiquing trio is blogging over at LoveCats at the moment about Finding Inspiration.  Anna is not someone to pass over a picture of Hugh's pecs either (just one of the reasons I adore her), but this time she's talking about her quotes about courage.  I know for sure that she collects them, because every now and then she'll shoot a few to Rach and me when we're feeling morbid, or stupid or like writers better suited to asking, "Would you like fries with that?" than "How's the GMC for this character?".  It's awesome.  I've even found a use for a few lately.

I've just recently had a CP-encouraged epiphany about my writing.  While I still looove paranormal and fantasy, I just don't think I'm a great one to write it.  A few months ago, I had two rejections--bang, bang--and, while one was quite positive, I struggled to get my head back in it's right place.  It happens to everyone.

God knows I've done enough crap in my life to grow a few flowers.
Dustin Hoffman

Now, Anna and Rach had been telling--you know, hinting to--me for quite some time that perhaps I wasn't quite being true to my writerly voice.  We're talking glass-half-full, !!!, joke-cracking emails and conversations, versus the dark, angst-ridden, emotion-heavy paranormal pieces I was writing.  For a long time, I kept on writing it because I just plain wanted to.

Which is fine.  I learned a lot.

Any man who keeps working is not a failure. He may not be a great writer, but if he applies the old-fashioned virtues of hard, constant labor, he'll eventually make some kind of career for himself as writer.
Ray Bradbury

Really, at least I was writing.

Eighty percent of success is showing up.
                                                                                                             Woody Allen

In that time, I clocked up five rejections (I know, compared to some peoples' experience, this is weeny.  I know).  It was a bit of a PITA.  I toyed with stopping.  You know.  NOT WRITING.

Couldn't do it.

Our greatest glory is not in never failing, but in rising up every time we fail.
Confucius

When I stopped teaching full-time, I thought, "Woohoo!  No more homework!"  And here I was, banging away at a computer at night again.  Felt like I'd come full-circle.

I love being a writer. What I can't stand is the paperwork.

Peter de Vries

I was confused, uncertain about the craft, quite certain about my suckiness and, frankly, a little bit bonkers about it all.

Creativity is allowing yourself to make mistakes. Art is knowing which ones to keep.
                                                                                                              Scott Adams

But, I was certain I was starting from pretty much the same place as most writers--Ground Zero.  I mean, we're all just the same basic creatures, with two arms and two legs (for the most part), right?  If X could write something that spoke to the populace at some level, why the hell couldn't I?  I had to face it--it was my authorial voice.  Paranormal was not working for me.  Boohoo.

It took me fifteen years to discover I had no talent for writing, but I couldn't give it up because by that time I was too famous.

Robert Benchley

To that rather exciting end, I've switched lanes!  I've started a Aussie-based romcom and I'm LOVING it.  It's kinda squeeful.  As gut-churningly scary as it is to veer from what you know, I've done the right thing.  I think.

Never throw up on an editor.
                                                                                                              Ellen Datlow

I'm so glad I took the advice of my marvellous, wondrous CP's.  They are, with or without quotes, truly inspirational.

If you're needing inspiration, jump online and google some quotes, head over to LoveCats to share with Anna.  It's amazing how much of that wisdom you can apply to your own writerly life.
Never laugh at live dragons.
JRR Tolkein

Finally, because you've been completely marvellous to read right to the end of this gargantuan post, here's a small thank you from moi.  Yes, it's a wet HUGH!  Hehe.

Win Anna Hackett's new Nocturne Bites - ONE NIGHT WITH THE WOLF!

To celebrate the release of One Night with the Wolf, Anna is giving away an e-copy EVERY WEEK in March!  That's all kinds of awesome!

From www.eharlequin.com...

One Night with the Wolf

by Anna Hackett

Werewolf Jade Thorne needs a man—a young, virile man to give her love and pleasure. As a rare female alpha, she must keep her pack safe by pledging herself in marriage to an aging leader from a rival pack. Until then, she wants to experience the raging passion of a wolf in his prime. She even has an ideal lover at hand: her Second, Christian Tallant.

But Christian is a wolf who will demand to dominate her body, mind and soul. Now Jade must decide if she can afford to submit to his desire—and if one night with the wolf will really be enough....

Here's what Anna has to say about One Night...

This is my first ever wolf shifter story and I loved writing it. There's also a super sexy chase scene that my wonderful CPs loved! (E - I sooo did!)  So if you're looking for a tight, sexy read featuring a hunky wolf hero and spunky wolf heroine, you'll find One Night available for download at eHarlequin, Amazon US and other ebooksellers.

And woo, that chase scene is worthy of it's illustrious fame!

In order to get your name in the draw, head over to Anna's blog and answer her eeeeeassssy werewolf question!

Big congrats, Anna, and I can't wait to hear what you all think!

Lordy me, that Anna Hackett is a busy one...

One of my talented and awfully good looking critique partners, Anna Hackett, has a new cover for her March Nocturne Bites release, ONE NIGHT WITH THE WOLF.

Now, one of the many perks of having such awesome critique partners, is that I get to read these new releases before they are grown, just little word documents looking for a home.  And I gotta tell you, this is one werewolf story you do not want to miss.  Anna is the a master of the short story (so much so that she teaches it!), but you'll want to read this for the chase-through-the-forest scene alone, which has become stuff of legend.

And all this while Anna is running her online course and penning a new werewolf story to follow up from this one.  Oh, and working a day job.

Can't wait for March!

Emmeline  :)
