August already, what the?!

Hi lovely people!

Once again, I find myself telling the world I haven't perished!  Dreadful.

BUUUUUUT, I have been busy!

Not only have I been working the day job, carting the offspring around (not the band, the children) and generally having a good 'ole time with Mr Sparky Lock, but I have been writing!

I've subbed two stories in the last ten days, and my excitement knows no bounds!

(That's a lot of !'s I note.  That's how pumped I am.  !)

So, Serendipity (Virtue Alliance) is off, as is a really shorty one about an urban mythical-creature hunter.  Wahooo!

Next comes one called Break at the Bend, a mystery rom com with rocky beaches, a hot Shakespeare-touting man and an elderly aunt with a concerning internet habit.

Two more Virtue Alliance stories are knocking at my brain, so I'd better let them loose soon, too.

The gorgeous and very hard-working Anna Hackett has been going GANGBUSTERS!  Head over to her blog to see the awesome things she's been up to.  It's quite amazing!

Big smooches to you all,

Em xx

Tuesday, July 28, 2015

It really is concerning how often I need to tell the internet I'm still alive and kicking.

Hello, lovely people!

Long time no see!  Sorry about that.

I could tell you all about it, but it would be dreadfully boring.  I would like to sum up the past year in a haiku:

Kids have to play sport
Tall pile of dirty washing
Em is distracted.

I do hope you enjoyed that.  It took a lot of tapping syllables out on my fingers, but I feel like I got there.

So, what's been going on with you?  Loads of cool stuff, I imagine?

Some of my news isn't really mine, sadly, but happily for my CP, Anna Hackett, it's great news!  Anna's been kicking sci-fi action romance butt and taking sci-fi action romance names.  She's recently become a NY TIMES BESTSELLER and won a PRISM Award.

I am in awe.

If you go to her blog, you'll learn all about her epic awesomeness, not to mention find out how to get a few of her book FOR GODDAMNED FREE!

And the best things in life are free, people.

I've been getting back into my writing.  To keep myself ignoring the washing pile, I made a widget (It's on the right.  It's red.  You can't miss it).

I've been working on another Virtue Alliance story (Liberating Clemency was published in the very marvellous Sci-Fi Romance Quarterly Magazine.  Find it here).  This one belongs to Seren, also known as Serendipity.

It's taken a little while, as I had a few K down, and then changed the setting after a Twitter discussion with Anna and the very clever Lindsay Buroker, after which I changed my mind about my setting.  Oopsy daisy.   Serves Emmeline right for not planning her schizz a little better.  But, I'm very happy with the new vibe, so that's noice.

I had been reading some (well, ALL) of Lindsay's books (including her pen name Ruby Lionsdrake), and I was GOBSMACKED and FLABBERGASTED to find that Anna and Lindsay had conducted a fabulous podcast chat about SFF Marketing.  It was stellar, and I've also enjoyed many more podcasts from Lindsay and her friends and guests since.  I get it on my iPhone, but you can totes watch it on 'Tube.

I can feel by the increasing tempo of my heart beat and a impending sense of dread that it is nearly... time to pick the OFFSPRING up from school (I love them dearly, I really do), so I shall leave you with one thing.

This is Hew, who is going to be Seren's squeeze if he'd just chill out a bit.

I found him here.

Until next time, happy reading and writing and kid-wrangling and cooking and clothes washing.

Emmeline.  xx

Whoopeeee! There's some new Anna Hackett sci-fi romance up for grabs! IN THE DEVIL'S NEBULA...

Ya'll have heard how much I love my girl Anna Hackett, right?

I'm sure, based on my verbose and protracted fan girl love professions, you will have all raced out and snagged yourself a copy of the very fabulous first book in The Phoenix Adventures series - AT STAR'S END, and you're all waiting with anxiously bated breath for the next book.

WELL, WAIT NO LONGER, ACTION SCI-FI ROMANCE JUNKIES!

Read on...

Action, Adventure and Romance IN THE DEVIL’S NEBULA
First there was AT STAR’S END and the treasure hunt to find the last remaining fragment of the Mona Lisa. Now travel to the heart of the Devil’s Nebula on the hunt for the gun used to assassinate Abraham Lincoln.

He lost it all.
His career, his woman, his sanity.
Two years ago, on a deadly mission to the lawless Devil’s Nebula, Commander Zayn Phoenix’s life imploded. Now the former Strike Wing pilot fills his days with dangerous adventures alongside his treasure hunter brothers.
But his nights are another story: haunted by nightmares of one unforgivable act.
Until an assassin lures him into a hunt. A hunt for her freedom from the Assassin’s Guild. A hunt for a derringer used in an ancient and infamous assassination—of old Earth president, Abraham Lincoln.
Zayn is compelled to join the perilous adventure with Ria Dante that will take them straight into the heart of the Devil’s Nebula, but not for money, fame or treasure.
He joins because Ria has the face of the woman he left for dead in the Nebula years before.

To read the first chapter or buy <<Click here>>

Ria moved her hands, her body bending like a slim tree in the wind. “Taiji isn’t so much about killing, it’s about settling the mind, balancing your energies.”
“Sounds very Old Earth.”
“It has its origins there, although they’re murky now. We don’t know exactly where it came from.”
“So, you’re feeling the need to balance your energies?”
She looked over her shoulder. “Yeah. Being hunted, stealing things, and dealing with you, it’s left me a little…out of balance.”
Zayn stepped toward her. “I came here to apologize. I didn’t kiss you because you remind me of Vik. I just…wanted to kiss senseless a hot woman who I’d just enjoyed a brilliant hunt with.”
Ria stopped and stared at him. “Jesus, Phoenix, you have no pretty words do you?”
He shrugged. “I’m just a simple pilot.”
She huffed out a breath. “There’s nothing simple about you. And for some crazy reason, it works for me.”

About Anna:
I'm Anna Hackett and I write action romance stories to thrill you, excite you and leave you inspired. I write about people overcoming unbeatable odds and achieving seemingly impossible goals to inspire you with the truth that the possibility exists for all of us to do the same. I love car chases, explosions and spaceships...and of course when the boy wins the girl. Oh, and I'm a sucker for that moment when the team is walking in slow motion, shoulder-to-shoulder heading off into battle. After reading, watching or writing an awesome action romance story, I'm left energized and feeling like anything is possible. I aim to give the same to my readers.
I love hearing from fellow action romance lovers! www.annahackettbooks.com

It's ALIVE!!!

Hello, intrepid internet friends.

Can you just imagine me now?  White coat on, hands gleefully in the air, flotsam of an antiquated laboratory strewn around a large metal table...

Sure you can.

In fact--real life is nothing like that, as I sit at my Mac in front of the fire, with a very nice hot chocolate by my right hand--but I still maintain (though the dog is looking at me like I've lost my mind) :

It's ALIVE!!!

Sci-Fi Romance Quarterly Issue #3 is here!  Featuring articles, reviews, opinions, and TWO short stories!  One of which is has been penned by moi!

With thanks to one of my lovely CPs, Anna, who helped me no end with this one.  You will also find Anna's excellent books reviewed here...

And if you've come here from the live links at SFRQ.  Hiya.  Thanks for dropping in.

Happy sci-fi romance reading!

At Star's End! There's very nice man-chest...

It's so Sci-Fi-ey!!

My gorgeous and completely over-worked critique partner Anna Hackett has a new sci-fi action romance At Star's End (Book 1 of the Phoenix Adventures) coming out with Carina Press March 31st, and here's her cover:

Dr. Eos Rai has spent a lifetime dedicated to her mother’s dream of finding the long-lost Mona Lisa. When Eos uncovers tantalizing evidence of Star’s End—the last known location of the masterpiece—she’s shocked when her employer, the Galactic Institute of Historic Preservation, refuses to back her expedition. Left with no choice, Eos must trust the most notorious treasure hunter in the galaxy, a man she finds infuriating, annoying and far too tempting.
Dathan Phoenix can sniff out relics at a stellar mile. With his brothers by his side, he takes the adventures that suit him and refuses to become a lazy, bitter failure like their father. When the gorgeous Eos Rai comes looking to hire him, he knows she’s trouble, but he’s lured into a hunt that turns into a wild and dangerous adventure. As Eos and Dathan are pushed to their limits, they discover treasure isn’t the only thing they’re drawn to…but how will their desire survive when Dathan demands the Mona Lisa as his payment?

Still alive...

Though you could be forgiven for thinking otherwise, here at Casa Lock, things are just fine.

If a little busy.

While I would like it to be the, "I've written a book, and it's fabulous dahlink" kind of busy, it's not.  It's more the, "Jeebus, it's Monday already?!  Right!  Fess up!  Who stole my weekend?" kind of busy.

The madly-spinning carousel of life.  The one we all get stuck on from time to time.  I appear to have my ass superglued to it, but I am determined to find some kind of solvent and douse the seat of my pants very soon.

Not everyone is busy and therefore non-productive.  Case in point--my lovely CP, Anna Hackett.  She's being a complete and utter darling and giving us a new book.  This one is exciting because it's actually a story about a guy in her Anomaly Trilogy.

THE BAD GUY!

Yes!  Leven gets his own SALVATION!

Can't wait!

All right, I have to go and be horribly, awfully domestic.  Please check out the new SARA Blog.  I've been hanging out there a bit these days, they have wine in bottles, and glasses with stems.

Classy.

Until next time,

Em.  xx

Oh, to be in an alternate universe right now...

Romance + Sci Fi + Holidays = A GALACTIC HOLIDAY!

I'm donning my pimping pants to yell from the back dock of my space station:

A GALACTIC HOLIDAY is OUT NOW!

Are you like me?  I love Christmas with adoration bordering on pathological, but sometimes the crazy lead-up blows.  But I HAVE A CURE!

How about an alternate universe?  A few stolen hours getting festive, futuristic and SCHMEXY?

Lose a few blissful hours on A GALACTIC HOLIDAY.

Anna Hackett has teamed up with Stacy Gail and Sasha Summers to bring you her first sci-fi romance, Winter Fusion, in a brand-new anthology from Carina Press.

A Galactic HolidayIt's getting some great reviews:

"If you are a Science Fiction Romance reader A Galactic Holiday is a must read."
"I really enjoyed this collection of novellas and I would recommend it to any fans of romantic sci-fi in the mood for the holidays."

"A Galactic Holiday is a wonderful read for the holiday season. Part romance, part sci-fi, and part just plain fun."

Head over to Anna's blog for your chance to win some intergalactic swag.  I don't know what that is, but it sounds awesome.

I'd like a lightsaber.  Or maybe Anna's hero in nothing but a wrist-sync and a smile.

More AH cover love!

Since school holidays have rendered me less-than-scintillating, I'm bobbing up to share the news of someone blindingly, marvellously, scintillating.

My ultra-productive critique partner, Anna Hackett, has a new cover.

This one is for Mind Raider, Book Two of the Anomaly trilogy.  Which, not surprisingly, follows on from Time Thief, Book One.  Both are novellas.  Both are completely wicked.

I know, because I've read them.  ;)

So, above-mentioned cover love, coming out later this month:

While I'm spruiking (love that word!), check the reviews of Time Thief at Goodreads, where it's averaging 4.8 out of five stars at time of typing.  Completely fabulous.

And I agree.  :)

Anna Hackett's upcoming release from Carina Press - we have cover liftoff!

The very funky Anna Hackett, one of my ultra-talented CP's and fellow Darksider, has a brand new cover!  I stole this from her blog...

This is a collection of scifi novellas out on December 3rd, just in time to get festive, including Anna's WINTER FUSION, which I LOVED BEYOND MEASURE.  Oh, Savan!

Here's the blurb for WINTER FUSION:

Ex-space marine Savan Bardan survived the Galactic Wars to become the most ruthless trade negotiator in the galaxy. His planet needs energy to survive, and he'll do anything to close the deal for the Perman fusion crystals that can provide it—even if it means seducing his beautiful, infuriating opponent, a rival icier than her planet.

Perma's top nego
tiator, Brinn Fjord, lost her father when Savan delayed her planet's Trade Guild membership years ago. She hates the handsome Rendarian and the planet he represents. She's determined to finish the deal and get rid of him as quickly as possible, so she can celebrate the holidays.

But soon the rival negotiators are in a fight for their lives. Besieged by mysterious accidents and unforgiving weather, Brinn and Savan have no one to depend on but each other. As they put the past aside, they uncover a desire hot enough to melt ice, and Brinn discovers a secret that may keep them apart.

Here's the blurb for the whole bang lot:

Do androids dream of electric sugar plums?
A detective who refuses to modify her body teams up with her cyborg rival to track down a burglar who is putting toys into homes. A solitary ice miner finds love and friendship while stranded on the surface of Galileo. And two hardheaded negotiators put their differences aside to evade an assassin and save their planets. Enjoy these visions of Christmases yet to come with three science-fiction novellas from Carina Press.
Edited by Angela James, this anthology includes:
  • How the Glitch Saved Christmas, by Stacy Gail
  • Galileo's Holiday, by Sasha Summers
  • Winter Fusion, by Anna Hackett

Anna's other recent release, Time Thief, is on sale at the moment.  Check out her blog for info...

Finally, in more Hackett news, Anna is at fellow SARA Eleni's Taverna for Writing Buddy Wednesday.

More cover loving...

You know my CP, Anna, right?

Well, she has been INSANELY BUSY.  Not only has she just released the very cool TIME THIEF, but she's got a new cover!

This one is coming out December 3rd, from Carina Press, and will also be a part of their sci-fi anthology, A Galactic Holiday.

Oh, the PRETTY!

She'd been a thief a long time but bank robbery was a new low...

...Anna Hackett's TIME THIEF is OUT NOW!

So, I have two Critique Partners--you knew that, right?

And you know that I think they're completely awesome, right?

Did you know that one of them has a COMPLETELY AWESOME NEW BOOK OUT?

TIME THIEF is the first book of Anna Hackett's new Anomaly Trilogy (See how cool that sounds?)

I have always loved Anna's work in an entirely non-biased way, ever since I read SAVAGE DRAGON, her pitch-winning Silhouette Nocturne Bites.

Here's a blurb:

Hunted for her ability to steal time, Bay North lives a life on the run. All she wants is to make the crime lord who slaughtered her family pay. But now he's set the ultimate hunter on her trail and Bay will need all her skills to carry out her revenge and survive.
Ex-Navy SEAL Sean Archer saw his team killed by a time thief in Afghanistan and came back a broken man. He's made a dark deal with a criminal to hunt down all time thieves and now Sean's tracked the wily Bay North to Denver where he plans to rid the world of one more dangerous mutation.
But during a shootout, hunter and hunted find themselves depending on each other for survival. Joining forces to exact payback by stealing a priceless treasure, their reluctant alliance shatters both their defenses. Can Bay find the courage to trust? And can Sean convince a woman honed in revenge that she can have more than vengeance, blood and killing?
Get your copy at Amazon, Smashwords, or All Romance eBooks.  More estores to come.
Anna will be having a party at her blog soon to celebrate TIME THIEF's release, and I know she's going to be giving some very cool things away, so stay tuned for that.
Anna's been busy tweaking her website in time for her new release, I think it's come up a treat!  While you're perusing, check out her book list.
I'll leave you now to go download a book. :)

I've got a secret...

...and if you have ever met me, you'll know--short of superglue and maybe strategic placement of duct tape--I usually fail miserably at keeping them.

Today is no different.

I'm going to let you in on a secret, which in truth, isn't a secret at all.  Lucky for me, coz I'm about to let you in on it.

My marvellous CP, Anna Hackett, has a new book coming out!

Isn't it pretty?!  I'll keep you updated, but I have seen the shenanigans she has planned for the release and OH MY!  there will be lots of cool stuff going on.  Anna will also keep us updated at her blog:  www.annahackett.blogspot.com.

But at this stage, all that's still secret.

AHEM.  Excuse me while I go find the duct tape.

Stay awesome,
Em.

PS After a long hiatus, Anna is back on twitter @AnnaHackett.  Feel free to enter the twittersphere and heckle her a bit about her new releases this year.  Tell her Em sent you.  She loves the attention.  ;)

She's hanging out at DSDU now too, so head over there and get amongst it.

Y is for Yippeedoo.

It's July.  Which means that the RWA's 50Kin20days is over.

I didn't quite make goal (which was 20k), but I got close, and finished the wip, so I didn't suck as much as I suspected I would, which is always a nice suprise.  Yippeedoo!

That said, the wip is one HUUUGE, hot, stinky, convoluted MESS.  There is a long road ahead, re-write-wise.  The whole thing has just made me cranky enough that I want to beat it up a little just to make myself feel better, so that's good.

On the CP front, Anna and Rach have both been busy writing.  In fact, Anna's got some new releases coming up very shortly, which are awesome and exciting.  Stay tuned!

While you're headed over to Anna's website, hit DSDU's Good News as well.  They're busy little bats over there...

It's school holidays here, and we've been away at the beach, doing a great deal of not very much.  I've been reading, fiddling with my plot on the wip, and taking photos.

Here's my favourite.  I have called it, "Give us the fish, and nobody gets hurt.  Capiche?"

S is for Smashing News!

Hunter's Surrender

I wanted to give a huge HOOOOORAAAY! for Anna Hackett, one of my gorgeous critique partners, who has recently sold her very first sci-fi novella to Carina Press!  It will be a part of their December sci-fi anthology.

I am SO very excited for her!  And you should be excited, too, because the novella is SMASHING!  This one includes a drool-worthy hero who isn't afraid to say he was wrong, and a strong, kick-ass heroine who goes after what she wants.  Yum!

You might remember Anna, author of excellent novellas for Nocturne Bites, such as SAVAGE DRAGON, ONE NIGHT WITH THE WOLF, and my favourite (well, until I read this sci-fi one) HUNTER'S SURRENDER.

Speaking of smashing, go check out the DarkSide DownUnder blog, where Nicole Murphy's been talking about the difference between sci-fi and fantasy.  If you're lucky, you could score yourself a copy of THE RIGHT CONNECTION, Nicole's  new books.  Yes, Star Wars is mentioned!

Ooh, oooh!  While you're snagging freebies, head over to Amazon and check if Mel Teshco's STONE COLD LOVER is still available for diddly squat.  It's another great read!

Finally, a funny to get you through the weekend.  Either that, or make you very depressed.

PS - Totally not letting the offspring see this.  They'd love to call me Mop.

N is for Nothing, or at least Not much.

Guess what I've got for you this week?

Yup.

Nothing.

It was my birthday at the weekend (I can usually be found shouting that from the rooftops a few weeks prior.  Not sure what happened this year.  Life, I suppose), so I've spent a good part of the week in a flurry of wrapping paper, cheese knives, wine corks and kisses.

It's been marvellous.

There were a number of highlights--Sparky, who may have noted my technology obsession--got me some new gadgetry to play with.  Love it.

Also, I lunched nearby at The Lane, which is a completely gorgeous thing.  Stunning food, beautiful scenery, luscious wines, great company.  I was in heaven.

Here's a teaser pic of my favourite red wine, Reunion Shiraz, off The Lane's website:

Nom nom.  I was lucky enough to try the '09 on Friday.  It was different, but no less lovely.

Since I have nothing for you, how's about I talk about people who have actually done something?

One of my super-fab CP's, Anna, has blogged about Archimedes.

Eleni, one of my SARA buddies, has a very active and dynamic blog at Eleni's Taverna.

If you're still hungry for news, check out the latest SARA News blog.  Compiled by none other than moi.

What an inspiration...

Ha!  Did you think I was going to post another picture of Hugh Jackman sans shirt?  While that is always a distinct possibility, I actually wanted to talk about something other than the male form today.

I know, what's with that?

Anna Hackett, author of a number of awesome Nocturne Bites and one-third of our sensational critiquing trio is blogging over at LoveCats at the moment about Finding Inspiration.  Anna is not someone to pass over a picture of Hugh's pecs either (just one of the reasons I adore her), but this time she's talking about her quotes about courage.  I know for sure that she collects them, because every now and then she'll shoot a few to Rach and me when we're feeling morbid, or stupid or like writers better suited to asking, "Would you like fries with that?" than "How's the GMC for this character?".  It's awesome.  I've even found a use for a few lately.

I've just recently had a CP-encouraged epiphany about my writing.  While I still looove paranormal and fantasy, I just don't think I'm a great one to write it.  A few months ago, I had two rejections--bang, bang--and, while one was quite positive, I struggled to get my head back in it's right place.  It happens to everyone.

God knows I've done enough crap in my life to grow a few flowers.
Dustin Hoffman

Now, Anna and Rach had been telling--you know, hinting to--me for quite some time that perhaps I wasn't quite being true to my writerly voice.  We're talking glass-half-full, !!!, joke-cracking emails and conversations, versus the dark, angst-ridden, emotion-heavy paranormal pieces I was writing.  For a long time, I kept on writing it because I just plain wanted to.

Which is fine.  I learned a lot.

Any man who keeps working is not a failure. He may not be a great writer, but if he applies the old-fashioned virtues of hard, constant labor, he'll eventually make some kind of career for himself as writer.
Ray Bradbury

Really, at least I was writing.

Eighty percent of success is showing up.
                                                                                                             Woody Allen

In that time, I clocked up five rejections (I know, compared to some peoples' experience, this is weeny.  I know).  It was a bit of a PITA.  I toyed with stopping.  You know.  NOT WRITING.

Couldn't do it.

Our greatest glory is not in never failing, but in rising up every time we fail.
Confucius

When I stopped teaching full-time, I thought, "Woohoo!  No more homework!"  And here I was, banging away at a computer at night again.  Felt like I'd come full-circle.

I love being a writer. What I can't stand is the paperwork.

Peter de Vries

I was confused, uncertain about the craft, quite certain about my suckiness and, frankly, a little bit bonkers about it all.

Creativity is allowing yourself to make mistakes. Art is knowing which ones to keep.
                                                                                                              Scott Adams

But, I was certain I was starting from pretty much the same place as most writers--Ground Zero.  I mean, we're all just the same basic creatures, with two arms and two legs (for the most part), right?  If X could write something that spoke to the populace at some level, why the hell couldn't I?  I had to face it--it was my authorial voice.  Paranormal was not working for me.  Boohoo.

It took me fifteen years to discover I had no talent for writing, but I couldn't give it up because by that time I was too famous.

Robert Benchley

To that rather exciting end, I've switched lanes!  I've started a Aussie-based romcom and I'm LOVING it.  It's kinda squeeful.  As gut-churningly scary as it is to veer from what you know, I've done the right thing.  I think.

Never throw up on an editor.
                                                                                                              Ellen Datlow

I'm so glad I took the advice of my marvellous, wondrous CP's.  They are, with or without quotes, truly inspirational.

If you're needing inspiration, jump online and google some quotes, head over to LoveCats to share with Anna.  It's amazing how much of that wisdom you can apply to your own writerly life.
Never laugh at live dragons.
JRR Tolkein

Finally, because you've been completely marvellous to read right to the end of this gargantuan post, here's a small thank you from moi.  Yes, it's a wet HUGH!  Hehe.

To celebrate the release of One Night with the Wolf, Anna is giving away an e-copy EVERY WEEK in March!  That's all kinds of awesome!

One Night with the Wolf

by Anna Hackett

Werewolf Jade Thorne needs a man—a young, virile man to give her love and pleasure. As a rare female alpha, she must keep her pack safe by pledging herself in marriage to an aging leader from a rival pack. Until then, she wants to experience the raging passion of a wolf in his prime. She even has an ideal lover at hand: her Second, Christian Tallant.

But Christian is a wolf who will demand to dominate her body, mind and soul. Now Jade must decide if she can afford to submit to his desire—and if one night with the wolf will really be enough....

Here's what Anna has to say about One Night...

This is my first ever wolf shifter story and I loved writing it. There's also a super sexy chase scene that my wonderful CPs loved! (E - I sooo did!)  So if you're looking for a tight, sexy read featuring a hunky wolf hero and spunky wolf heroine, you'll find One Night available for download at eHarlequin, Amazon US and other ebooksellers.

And woo, that chase scene is worthy of it's illustrious fame!

In order to get your name in the draw, head over to Anna's blog and answer her eeeeeassssy werewolf question!

Big congrats, Anna, and I can't wait to hear what you all think!

I love some other people's stuff, and if I use your stuff, I try to tell everyone that it's not my stuff - it's someone else's stuff. But, if I have used some of your copyrighted stuff here and you would like me to remove your stuff, let me know.... It's all for non-commerical use...
